hi!
i haven't worked much more on my bag yet (waiting for Feb 1!!) Also - i want to work on it in my class, since we are not supposed to bring in our own yarn, and my other projects are on yarn from michael's craft store!! anyway - i did not test my gage either - per the advice of my instructor. like someone mentioned, it doesn't need to fit a person... i am still on four DPNs, about to switch to a circular (probably next Wed in class) - but i have a photo of what i have done so far on my blog - knittykitty.blogs.com my bag is purple with blue handles and base. i don't know what kind of yarn it is, i kept picking out yarns until the teacher said "that kind will work for felting"! can't wait to see everyone's bags!!!! katie |

Quote: Ladies, EVERYTHING will disappear when felted! I spent so much time playing around with the increases and the smoothness at the edges of the handles and when the felting was done . . . HO! it was one beautiful unified piece of fabric. I didn't swatch or test felt either and it was my first time; you'll be so happy! daien

Market bag | ||
|
Hi! Thanks for the feedback about the felting process. I've only felted on other piece (a small purse) and it took FOREVER to get the "knitted" look to disappear. I did combine yarns on that one (knitted a double strand--Noro Kureyon plus Lamb's Pride) so maybe that affected the felting process. I now think it was unnecessary to double strand, even though the pattern specified to knit that way. At any rate, I've been told the Cascade 220, which I'm using on the market bag, will felt easily and quickly! We're expecting a major snow storm this weekend, so I think I'll have plenty of knitting time.

Done! | ||

My not so market bag is done! Felting is SO much fun! It's shrunk even more row-wise then I swatched, but it came out really cute!! When It's done blocking I'll take a picture.

Mine isn't done yet :/ | ||

I ran out of yarn on the handles. I decided to make mine all one color and took the chance that I could get away with a single hank of wool-pak. I guessed wrong.

Thats too bad! Now you have to improvise...Going from 0 needles to sz7 is pretty weird. I only ripped it out once, when I totally lost control of the 4 huge pokey needles, but now I am perking along nicely on 18 st. so far. Looks nice and orderly, and FAST! Today chose to be one with real light, so that is really nice, to see the black wool. We have been enjoying mat gray light for so long here...And I cant go out and weed even if it isnt raining, because I HAVE to do this bag!

Ah, zenmama, that's exactly what happened to me (sorta!). I had some stash and used it thinking it would be enough, but when I got up to the handles I saw I was going to run out. Grabbed another piece of stash, and ripped all the way back to one inch above my base. Knit in a stranded pattern with the new fibre and then finished off the handles with it. It's all good, it's all knitting!

now why didn't I think of that? I found another yarn - really yummy cherry tree hill potluck handpaint - and completely frogged the bag and re-wound the other yarn. I could have saved myself a fair amount time if I had kept the base!
ah well, this will give me a chance to knit and felt a test-swatch before I re-knit the entire bag. I am going to do the bottom and the handle-tops in the dark green wookpak and then use the cherry tree hill for the sides. |

*cue Carpenters* We've only just begunnnnn

So, I cast on and did a whole whopping inch before I just had to take a nap. The last week had caught up to me as well as my morning Stash Sortie & monthly McDonald's treat with my DD. Ended up finishing up a 'round the house hat' for my guy and casting on another proj. Sunday is reserved for the FMB, and browsing of course
Buon divertenti! Wendy |

Well, you did start. I am glad you are human, and need to rest. I myself am vaccumning because Corgis shed, turning blue rugs to white. Corgis shed most of their coats, daily. Then I will take it up again.

bought my yarn! | ||
|
Okay, I'm going a bit off-pattern here and using a totally different weight of yarn. I got some Reynolds Lopi, in a light taupe, and then I'm adding in salmon and periwinkle. I figure, if you can't do strange colors in a bag, when can you? I figure that the bag will still be good for holding my knitting projects, and since it will be stiffer I can make it a little larger, too.
Now I just have to wait for the yarn to arrive! |

Re: oooh i am so mad at myself

i ran into the yarn store especially to buy yarn for the French Market Bag, got so distracted by mohair, yarn sales and even bought a cherry hill potluck that i ended up buying lambspride in BULKY instead of worsted!
now i'm sitting at home kicking myself because i will have to wait until monday to exchange these skeins as this yarn store is not open on sundays! drat. guess i will not be able to join in the Official Kickoff. oh well, let's unwrap that cherry hill potluck - i think i will make a sweater coat out of this acid green bluish thing... |

Happy Cast On! | ||

Oh no CSZ! oh well, at least you have a cool sounding yarn to play with in the intrim!
Thanks 766lord To all of you participating, I took a bit of time this morning and updated the French Market Knitalong site. If I have inadvertently left you off the list please let me know. A bit of confusion between board poster names and email names and actual names and I want to make sure I didn't lose anyone! Okay enough typing for the moment, off to make caffe'. Not allowed back at the keyboard till I have another 3 inches done! (hey a girl has to set realistic goals you know Oh yes, and I did mention that knitting once was something only men did, that peaked his curiosity. I'll get him knitting just yet! |

The site is so nice! It makes doing the FMB so eventish, like being in a performance with an audience. I like it a lot. This is fun!

I thought my will power would just allow me to lurk and enjoy your enthusiasm, but I broke down. Yesterday, we had to go to Sacramento for a dog-related thing. My DH asked if there was a yarn shop in Sacramento (Yes, he is a very nice guy.). Why yes, there is a yarn shop in Sacto!
So afterward we found LYS and, while being adamant that I didn't need to do a FMB, I found myself holding just the right amount of 100% wool, blue and heathery green that the clerk assured me would felt very well. Go figure. I knitted some swatches. My gauge is still too small, but I cast on 10 stitches rather than 8 and will adjust accordingly. So I'm aboard on this adventure. From the sound of the postings I'm already tailing, but I won't fret. HK, Tina |

Oh, Zibbibo, the site is terrific! Thanks so much for taking the time to create such a fun space for everyone. I was in Ursula's shop last week (Ursula Fischer: Needle Arts, Honolulu) when Lori and a few others were there and saw their 'big bad bags,' it was such good fun to have the knitting and Knitty connection. I asked my kids' dad if I could borrow his digital camera to take the pictures and this morning he asked me three times "Aren't you going to take a picture of your bag?????" Then I just went to the site and got your message! Okay, okay!! I'm going to go do it right now!! Everyone's bag sounds so beautiful, and they're all so different, can't wait to see the pictures.
Have you checked out the Men's Knitting Ring? I love some of the names of the blogs . . . "When Knitting Was A Manly Art," "IcarusBoyKnits," just to name a few. daien

Handles for bag | ||
|
Earlier in the discussion. daien wrote about altering the bag handles by knitting in the round for the last three inches. Could you please give details? (How many stitches, what needles, how did you connect the handles, etc.). I think this sounds like a great idea and might try it when I get that far!
