Knit a swatch, boil it up, and see. It wont felt very much. Try it and see. It will just take a few hours instead of a few days..or weeks .AKA:dont bother. But then you would know for sure, not rely on someone elses word.

Speaking of French Market, I got to buy my cascade 220 before I got htis horrible cold. It is in a deep blue jewel color. I love it. If I were a dog, I would roll in it. It is that pretty.

I second the swatch & boil!
You never know until you try. Make sure it is a generous swatch mind you. I've spent the past 2 days tourturing a piece. Swatch felted with some convincing to submit to the heat, larger piece has been thru the hand AND machine and there is No Way it is going to give up. Alas, I now have a lovely navy dusting cloth 766lord get well soon! |

yeah, that was the "magic" circular technique someone else pointed me to. the circular i had was a hand me down, old and not that flexible. i picked up two new circulars today and will try it.
I have pics of what i have so far (about half of the base) and the colors i am using on my blog knittykitty.blogs.com katie |

which base? | ||

Are you guys doing the flat knitted base, or circular? I'm leaning towards the flat because I knit much faster and easier on straight needles.

Circular, I did the circular and am going to do it again. Of course, it's all a matter of preference, but it's just magical to watch the bag appear completely formed out of thin air (well, thin air and your beautiful wool!!), and not have to stitch any seams. Especially when you stitch the handles together with the kitchener (sp?) stitch and when you put down your needles, you're practically ready to pop it in the washer!
Oooooo, I so love knitting! ~daien~

I was thinking of knitting the flat base as well, definitely speedier for me then doing sides w/ good sized dpns.
For you who already have the FPs, did your final post felting size pretty much measure up to the pattern? |

And your enthusiasm is good to combat the winter weather! I am going to use the double points and circulars because they are so sensible and enjoyable for me to use. What size needles are you all using to get the gauge?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm almost done with my French market bag. I asked a question back in the patterns thread, but sort of forged ahead on my own. I have one handle done and three to go. I'm using Takhi yarn in Dazzle (100% wool) , I think - stripes of hot pink, orange, cream and chocolate brown. I went up to a 10.5 needle to make gauge. When I finish I'll do another swatch and test it in the wash, as I've never felted - will it matter if I do an "economy half load" or full? Cause I have to deal with my condo's washing machine, which does not do half loads.
I'll try and post a picture when I'm done. Whee! |

To answer Wendy's question, I got a little carried away with the felting process (it was my first time, and I was just amazed) and my bag came out a bit smaller. Of course, if I had stopped the process earlier it would have been larger! Soooo, it's thick and cozy . . . I'll do the next one with a bit more restraint!
Here's a link to a Knitty article that was helpful with the felting process: Felt This! Looked up the Takhi colors, beautiful! I'm still working on getting pictures to you folks . . . ~daien~

Whoops, my market back mutated. I decided to change the design. I have a plastic shopping bag that I've been using for my knitting that I found to be the perfect size. so I decided to try to imitate it. t's my first project without a pattern!

Yarn for French market bag | ||
|
I need advice regarding yarn for the French market bag. I have some Lamb's Pride, worsted weight, but I'm not sure if this is heavy enough since the pattern calls for Aran weight. Do I need to knit with a double strand? Or switch to the bulky weight? Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!

That should be just right..estien on 18/1 in the supernewbie support group place listed under weight/yardages a whole bunch of sites to go to see the different yarn weights and what they are called..aran and worsted are either the same or really close. Just one strand is required. I am just getting it straight myself!

Thanks for the help with the yarn selection! I decided to switch to the Cascade 220--orange for the bottom, and the marled pink/orange for the body. Does anyone have pictures of the bottom of this bag in progress? I'm just getting started (knitting in the round) and would love to see how that looks.

I cast on on Saturday!
Yarn (unless my Little Old Yarn Guy has something for me) will be two shades of grey Mystery Wool (more than likely it's Binocchi since that's mainly what my LOYG tends to sell),already swatched and felts like a dream. All I had to do was hold the swatch above the boiling Cauldron of Death and wouldn't ya know it, it felted outta fear. Well, something like that. A whole weekend to knit, what a luxury |

YEAH
I plan to use Manos Del Uruguay (not sure what color yet but know I will use purple SOMEWHERE) and will felt my swatch this weekend. Well, sorta swatch. I'm finishing up another bag in black, red, and gray also in Manos. I've never participated in a "knitalong" .... do we just sign in and post questions/comments/concerns?? Dawn |

Boiling caldron of death..an example of how Harry Potterese has crept into our evryday language? Yes, this will be my first knit a long too, and it seems logical to get ready together then talk about it! I have a snowflake hat on sz 0 needles going, I have taken soooo many rows out and done them over, I wont have it done by Sat. Or, will I? I suppose changing the chart and being sick was too much for my brain. But, now I am WELL! It will be fun to use sz giant needles after the 0.Purple sounds pretty.

O.K., gals...I'm working on the bottom of the bag (about 160 stitches on the circulars now) and I'm wondering if the "pattern" created by the increases will disappear when felted. If anyone has completed their bag, let me know! Also, I decided to skip the gauge swatch (since this doesn't have to fit anyone) but I hope I'm not sorry

I have also bought yarn to start knitting the French Market tote.
I will joining the knit a long. I have chosen two yarns. Not sure which one I will use yet. I am leaning towards the yarn that is a varigated blue. At the moment I am finishing up a pair of socks knitted on a size 1 needle. I also have to agree that moving on to a project with larger needles will good. Sharon |
