YAY! I've set up space so a gallery of FOs, in this case fabulous bags can be displayed for the world to OOh and AAAh and even OOOH LA LA over here The FrenchMarket Knitalong.
![]() So between now and The Great Casting On you have time to check that stash and warm up those needles! Buon Divertenti! Wendy **edited to update link to FMB site** |

Indeed! The skies here are gray, you are going to Malta to wed. Making a French Market bag would frisk things up some, so yes Indeed.

Re: market bag | ||

ooh one musn't hold off you know
the yarn will start whispering to you knitttttt meeeeeeeeee Hey you can be the first up in the gallery! More inspiration for the rest of us! I picked up some various spools of Binicocchi (Prato) wool from my local yarn pusher. Blue/lt grey/dk grey, have a purple and green. A shame the company doesn't have an online catalog, I'd love to be able to actually identify the yarn but then can't complain, I get it for 2 euros a kilo! So I'll either do mine in some mix of that with a little of a frogged Missioni wool.. UNLESS I find something Absolutely Fabulous in Malta!! (Can you tell I'm excited? |

Do be excited. It makes everyone be happy. I am going to use Cascade 220 and am knitting my swatch now in periwinkle blue since I have a ball of it, but will choose colors later. I will probably not use a skein of eyelash yarn I have around for around the top, but I might. What by the way, is the WEATHER in Malta. Is it RAINY and GREY by any chance, like here in the Pacific Northwest..ofcourse, we have twittering bald eagles too. They are getting ready for Spring and have a very loud lovely warble for their chosen one. As I am sure you do too.

Your right, I couldn't wait. :P I'm making mine in a soild red Uraguay handspun. My felting ratio is similar, but it takes a while to shrink up. I'm doing the non DPN bottom, just because I don't happen to have DPN's in that size. Have a great time in Malta!!!! |

I am using a forest-green 10-ply from babjoes and just finished the bottom. I did knit a purl turning row after I finished the base and I am slipping the corner stitches on alternate rows to help the bag stay square.
It was fun to start with just 8 stitches and see how quickly the project grew! |

Oh my . . . I found Knitty magazine last week, saw the French Market bag and immediately pulled out all my boxes of yarn to find a suitable thread and spent many happy hours in playing around with different ways to stretch out the pleasure of this project! Then found this wonderful Knitty coffeeshop a few days ago and have been reading and laughing and feeling so wonderful to have re-connected, albeit in cyberspace and mostly by lurking
A little background: Used to work at a YS in California, and moved to Hawaii 11 years ago. Have to admit that the weather here, while absolutely gorgeous and I'm not complaining at all, sorta limits the knitting of most warm items. For many reasons put aside my needles for the last 10 years but couldn't seem to get rid of my stash of boxes and boxes and BOXES of delectable yarns and unfinished projects (Angora, wool, silk!!! . . . in Hawaii!?!?!?). I have no idea what possessed me to pick up my needles again, but now that I have I can't believe I ever put them down. Back to the FMB. I've used a deep plum Berroco Montevideo Uruguayan wool and since I wasn't sure I had enough to finish, I introduced an unknown deep teal yarn in a 3 inch stranded pattern at the base of the bag 1 inch after the last increase. Amazingly, I ran out of the plum just exactly 3" from the top of each handle and so finished them off with the teal. I played around a bit with the increases, selvedge and the edge between the cast-off and handles just to smooth things out. I've never felted before so this is going to be great fun to 1) see how this bag turns out, and 2) find out if that teal stuff is really wool! Don't know if this will count for joining in the fun with the knit-along, but I haven't quite finished (tonight!!) and still yet have to do the felting. I'm so glad I found Knitty and this forum . . . thanks all. Mahalo Nui Loa! Teri |

Did you see the thread about how to tell if a yarn is wool by burning? acrylic melts.Just in case you want to check the teal.

I'm done with the base! I'm working on a complex lace shawl, so the bag is my portable easy project. My gage changed somehow though, so I think my FMB is going to be bigger then the pattern. I figure I'll just leave it, since I don't want to make the stitches too tight to felt it. Oh well, I guess it doesn't really matter!

This is a great bag! I walked into my lys yesterday and two ladies were working on their own . . . I finished my first one and am going to make another. I'm going to change two things: mine ended up being very square so I'm going to add some increases to slope out the sides a bit, and I'm going to knit in the round for the last three inches of the handle since it felts up that way, and it will be a smoother carry. I so enjoy hearing what everyone else is working on, very inspiring!

hi!
i'm working on the french market bag. i am taking a class and the instructor got me started on four DPNs. I am working on the base and I am up to a total of approximately 100 stitches, and need to go to 200. The instructions say switch to a circular needle when it is difficult to work on the DPNs. I am using shorter DPNs and starting to get to the point where i could easily drop a stitch accidently. I tried putting it on the circular, but the piece was too small to work it with the circular needle and i had to transfer back to the DPNs. do i need bigger DPNs? or is there someplace that has directions for circular needles when the piece isn't to full size yet? thanks in advance!!!! i can't make class this week and i hate not working on it! katie |

I'm delving into my Binicocchi wool stash will swatch up on Sunday, I think. Have another quickie felt experiement to complete first. Had sudden inspiration over in Malta. (: Do any of you hand felt? Or just toss in the machine? |

Katie,
Quote: I had the same problem and solved it by looping the excess cable out one of the corners. Then I would knit two sides and slide the loop out the next corner. I continued this way until the piece took up the slack. zibibboisgood, Quote: Quote: Will send photo! I so love this bag, as do my cats who keep trying to climb inside! As this was my first project, I just tossed in in the washer (and had excellent results), but would love to try hand-felting too. ~daien~

I want to join the knitalong, too!! I've got some lion brand Alpaka that I bought when I was new to knitting (before I discovered Elann) and I know that I'll never put the effort into making a sweater out of it because it's scratchy. But it's this great variegated brown and black that might felt really neat!
I love the circular needle loop trick! I've always gone with two circular needles, knitting from one to the other. I just do that on collars and things, I use dp for socks and mittens. I've only been knitting a couple years, so I'm still deciding what I like and dislike using. |

Ooh, wait a second...
Lion brand al-pa-ka is 30% wool, 30% alpaca and 40% acrylic. Does the acrylic content mean that it won't felt? I was going to do a swatch, of course, but is it even worth trying? This'll be my first felting experience. |
