One of the lists I'm on has been conducting some experiments and has come to the conclusion that 2 strands of Jamieson's Spindrift (sport/fair isle weight) produces a similar result to Jamieson's DK. In fact one swatcher said the fabric is firmer (she did both). The neat part is that Spindrift comes in smaller/cheaper balls.

She's a expert knitter so I trust her. She says that you would need 8 balls of the main colour but only one ball each of the other colours since none of them are used that much (remember all strands are doubled). In Canada the balls are about 5.70 each so that makes for a somewhat less expensive bag (the dk is 11 bucks and you would have tons leftover).

I'm still waiting for my issue so I'm not jumping in and buying the yarn yet, but I'm willing to join in a swap for the contrasting colours.

I'm also looking into using Naturespun yarn because it felts great and is much less expensive. The colour choices are good too. It might mean making a slightly bigger bag--since it's worsted weight-- but is worth a try.

Anyone suggest any good DK weight felting wool out there?
